5 Stars
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson follows Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a determined and smart high school senior who wants to re-investigate a closed local murder for her final year project. Though the case was officially closed five years ago—Sal Singh allegedly killed his girlfriend, Andie Bell, and later died by suicide—Pip believes there is more to it. She starts digging into the details and uncovering secrets that someone clearly wants to keep buried. The deeper and closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous things become, and it becomes clear that the real killer may still be out there.
This book is probably one of the best murder-mystery books I've ever read. Holly Jackson had me guessing the whole time, and it felt like I was working alongside Pip when trying to piece the evidence together myself. The story is very captivating and had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The format (mixing narratives with interview transcripts, journal entries, and text messages) made it even more immersive and realistic as well.
What I appreciated most was Pip herself. She's intelligent, brave, and determined, making her a great and inspiring protagonist to root for. The ending was both shocking and satisfying, and the plot twists that occurred along the way really surprised me and had me re-thinking my guesses. I loved how everything worked out, and every little detail came to use at some point in the investigation. I wouldn't say there is anything I disliked about this book.
Overall, I would highly recommend A Good Girl's Guide to Murder to anyone who enjoys mysteries, thrillers, or strong female reads. It's a 5-star read that won't disappoint.
