This book follows Mina, a film student in New York who is eager to attend USC and escape her family. As co-president of her school’s film club, she aims to win the Golden Ivy student film competition. After clashing with a rude stranger, she learns he’s a rising indie star, and she needs his help for the competition. As they work together, they become friends, and Mina realizes she’s falling for him. Ultimately, she discovers that home is where the heart is, allowing her to grow alongside her friends while navigating her ambitions and insecurities.
I loved this book so much! I felt incredibly seen—Mina is me; I am Mina. It was like reading about my own life. Everything she goes through, especially her struggles with depression and mental health, had me on the verge of tears. While I don’t have her family issues, I totally relate to feeling restricted.
And Emmett? He’s literally goals! So cute and just the greenest flag ever! Mina is such a dreamer with huge aspirations, and I deeply connected with her need for reassurance that everything will be okay. Her experience as the oldest daughter in a South Asian family hit so close to home.
Emmett is the epitome of a golden retriever boyfriend! I loved how he supported Mina, and when he called her his home? OMG, it melted my heart! I can’t express how much I adored this book and these characters. I’ve read Counting Down with You, and that book was adorable, I’ll definitely be reading more of her books!
