Book Review: Amulet Book 1: The Stonekeeper

By Kazu Kibuishi

4 Stars

Amulet #1: The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi is an exciting story set in Alledia, a magical yet dangerous world that contains mysterious creatures, like talking animals. This makes the reader very curious about this world, but honestly, curiosity kills the cat. The story starts with two siblings, Emily (the older sister) and Navin (the younger brother), moving into their great-grandfather's house because of a very heavy emotional incident – losing their father in a car accident. This sets a serious and emotional start to the story. The story picks up its pace way too fast, considering the kids are still mourning, and they stumble across a magical amulet that their great-grandfather owned.

Things take a turn when their mom is kidnapped by a group on the planet. Emily and Navin go on a rescue mission, where they discover their great-grandfather's amazing inventions, like robots, while starting to understand how the amulet that they inherited can help them.

One negative point of the story is that the story has a very fast pace; you can't really get to know the characters early on. Also the story leaves a lot of questions unanswered, which does create an exciting mindset but also frustration at times.

The plot is easy to follow and understand, and the pictures are colourful and full of detail. Readers of all ages will enjoy it.

I gave this book 4 stars because it does a great job starting the series and feels like the beginning of a big adventure. If you love graphic novels or fun stories with pictures, you should give this book a try!
