Book Review: Anne of Green Gables

By L.M. Montgomery

5 Stars

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery is a timeless classic that should be read by everyone at least once. The book features captivating characters and a heartwarming storyline that you will not stop thinking about.

The book follows young Anne Shirley, who is an imaginative orphan girl adopted by the Cuthberts. Anne has always had a love of creating romantic stories out of mundane things. Anne's habit of staying in her head creates problems in the old-fashioned and gossip-filled Avonlea, and the book shows her thriving and growing her personality. Apart from raising many disapproving eyebrows, Anne's lively nature and romantic little tales eventually melt everyone's hearts. It is surreal to see Anne grow from a clumsy and ignorant little girl to a grown woman who knows what she wants and knows how to fight for herself.

I don't usually read books that have such a calm plot, but something about Montgomery's writing style was so captivating that I could not put the book down. I especially liked how dynamically the characters were written and how easy it was to connect with them. When Anne first shows up at the Cuthbert household, Marilla (the lady of the house) is skeptical of her. But eventually, Anne manages to worm her way into Marilla's cold and reluctant heart. Also, Anne's character will definitely connect with many young girls all around the world. She is a raw human with her own insecurities and her coping mechanisms. Reading about Anne coming to terms with her physical insecurities was not only beautiful but also inspiring.

All in all, despite being a century old, Anne of Green Gables is an absolute must-read, and I will never stop recommending it to everyone.
