As the only love story in Middle-earth, and one of the major three stories, the tale of Beren and Luthien Tinuviel is about a young elf maiden and her mortal admirer. The romance between them blossoms as Beren spies Luthien dancing in the forest to the tune of her brother’s music, but alas, the race of elves deems her too high for a man such as him. He is challenged to steal into Angamandor, land of the evil Ainu Melko, and bring back a Silmaril. Despondent and depressed by the sure death of her lover, Luthien determines to follow him into Angamandor and help him retrieve the Silmaril. If he dies, then so shall she.
Lovers of Tolkien will recognize this classic as another of his masterpieces. Though he doesn’t follow the modern writing style, his stories are just as, if not more, enrapturing. Beren and Luthien’s tale stands out as a chivalrous fable of bravery, valiance, and romance.
Throughout the story, you meet Morgoth and Sauron, as well as Felagund, all of whom we’ve heard of in The Lord of the Rings, but you’re also introduced to Tevildo, the Prince of Cats. It’s fun to recognize those you’ve already met, and as always, it’s fascinating to meet those who’ve never before been mentioned.
The passion of love described touches the heart in a deep way, with Luthien being based on Tolkien’s first and greatest love, his wife Edith. Those who love Tolkien’s works and want to venture deeper into the amazing world of Middle-earth will enjoy this tale.
