Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter tells a story of a senior in high school, Liz, desperate to fall in love with her childhood crush, who just moved back in town. In her attempt to do this, she befriends her mischievous neighbour, Wes, as he can help her get the boy she was pining for, but during the process, she falls head over heels with the one person she never wanted
to be smitten by. This book is suitable for readers 13 and up. I like the references to classic romantic comedies throughout the movies, as it would be enjoyable for readers who are die-hard fans of the genre. I also appreciated how Liz’s character was very layered. She doesn’t necessarily “fit the mould” of a typical girl in a romance book as she is often loud, carefree, expressive and outspoken. I think she was a very enjoyable character to get to know. Additionally, I really appreciate Lynn Painter’s writing throughout the book, as it was light and engaging. Liz and Wes had great chemistry and banter. I thought the build-up between the characters was also quite perfect as their friendship evolves in sweet and endearing ways. On the other hand, I didn’t think the book was very fresh or offering something new. The entire concept of the book was not something unheard of. The plot and ending might have been predictable, but it was still a heartwarming and worthwhile read. I would definitely recommend this to a reader that truly enjoys romantic comedies and is in need of a comfort feel-good book.
