Book Review: Blue Period Volume One

5 Stars

Finding and enjoying Blue Period to its fine detail as an artist has been a rollercoaster of relatable emotions like no other. The story follows a third-year student, Yaguchi, who has no real interests or plans after high school and discovers a deeper connection towards art after looking at a classmate's painting, inspiring him to dive deeper. It's an absolutely incredible read but also a great representation of the stakes of being an art student. As an art student myself, reading only a couple chapters has covered anything you would normally learn in a number of classes, while Blue Period presents the information in a way that anyone would understand. Characters seen throughout the series have their own unique styles and personal take on how they present their art and see others, which was quite a breath of fresh air to have a manga on artists on this scale. The fact that the teachers in this manga give you tips, tricks and advice on art is astonishing, along with real artworks made by real people being included is also amazing!! Along with the manga, Blue Period also has an anime available on Netflix, which has stunning animation and the same key factors that make Blue Period the perfect art series out there. Picking this book up any day would make you feel a hundred times smarter and even convince you to draw. I know it did for me! Truly a great read, 100/10 even if you're not looking to learn.
