Book Review: Cinder

By Marissa Meyer

4 Stars

Cinder by Marissa Meyer is an awesome young adult sci-fi novel that gives the classic Cinderella story a futuristic twist. The main character, Cinder, is a super-talented mechanic living in New Beijing, but here’s the cool part about Cinder: she’s a cyborg, part human and part machine. While she’s working as a mechanic, she meets Prince Kai, and that’s where things get really interesting as Cinder is in love with the prince, just like Cinderella. The idea of a cyborg Cinderella is fresh and totally captivating. Cinder is a fantastic character; she’s smart, resourceful, and dealing with all the challenges of being different in a world and family that doesn’t fully accept her as a cyborg. Prince Kai, the central character in Cinder, is the charming and charismatic heir to the throne of the Eastern Commonwealth. As the future emperor, He can’t afford to fall in love with Cinder, but he can’t control his feelings either, can he? The romance between Cinder and Prince Kai is sweet and slow-burning. Their interactions are filled with chemistry and tension, and I couldn’t help but root for them. However, some might feel that the romance doesn’t get enough spotlight because of all the political and sci-fi stuff going on, which can make the pacing feel a bit off sometimes. Another small downside is that a few plot twists are a bit predictable, especially if you know the original Cinderella story well. But even with that, Cinder keeps you hooked with lots of action, intrigue, and emotional moments. Overall, Cinder is a fantastic start to the Lunar Chronicles series. It perfectly blends fairy tale magic with sci-fi adventure. With its unique premise, awesome world-building, and relatable heroine, it’s a must-read for fans of young adult fiction and fairy tale retellings.
