Book Review: Divergent

By Veronica Roth

One choice. That's all you get. In this dystopian thrill-ride of a novel, society is divided into five factions: Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the kind, Candor for the truthful, Erudite for the wise and Dauntless for the brave. Our protagonist, Beatrice Prior, a 16-year-old girl from Abnegation, is unsure of what to choose. Lucky for her, the aptitude test will help her. Regardless of the test results, Tris Prior must make her decision. Will she choose to be selfless and stay with her family? Or will she choose to be free to make her own future? Tris must make the choice that will decide the rest of her days. Then, she must survive those days at the place she chose to stay. Personally, I enjoyed this book. It was a combination of dystopian thriller and action. What I found great about this book is that it doesn't leave you bored, not for a single minute. I ended up finishing the book quickly, but that was because of how excited I was reading through the book. The chapters are not too long, and they are usually less than 15 pages each. The message that I took away from this book is that it's okay to be different things and that it's okay to have more than one place to belong. Roth may not be the best storyteller, but she sure was for this book.
