Book Review: Divergent

By Veronica Roth

5 Stars

Divergent is a popular dystopian novel written by Veronica Roth. This book is a thriller-filled story with the elements of choices, identity, and courage. Divergent is a story set in a future world where the society is divided into five groups called "factions". Each faction represents a value or a characteristic trait, including bravery, honesty, and kindness. At age sixteen, Tris has to choose which group she belongs to, which means leaving her family and everything she knows behind. Tris is a strong and relatable main character. At the beginning, she is unsure of herself and afraid of making the wrong choice. Later, she picks to join the Dauntless faction. For this faction, she must complete numerous difficult challenges that test both her physical and mental capabilities, further pushing her to her limits. The action scenes in this book are adrenaline-filled and keep readers turning the pages.

The book is written in a simple and clear format, making it easy for the readers to comprehend the information. The text and the plot within the book move quickly, with many action scenes and moments filled with suspense. The romance between Tris and Four (their trainer) adds more depth to the story. One con of this book was that some parts felt a little predictable, especially if you are familiar with Roth or the genre of dystopian fiction. Overall, I loved this book so much that I reread it. Divergent scores an easy 5 stars. It is a fun and exciting story that ties a strong message about courage, self-esteem, and identity.
