Dorohedoro was an interesting book. The story follows the journey of a man whose head has been turned into a lizard's head by a sorcerer. He and his sorcerer hunter crew try to find the sorcerer who gave him the head of a lizard. Throughout this book, it is their goal to find the sorcerer no matter the cost.
Throughout the book, we see that the protagonist might go insane. He said that he will continue killing sorcerers until he finds the right one. This adds a level of sadness for me. I feel this way because he's trying to undo the curse, but it seems as if the curse is consuming him. The book depicts all the violence the protagonist causes in a gruesome manner, implying how he is going down a dark path.
Having to read lots of non-fiction books all the time, this book really hit the spot for a fiction book. It's a world of magic similar to other fiction titles like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, but with a darker theme. The way that the author, Q Hayashida, wrote the magic system is so creative and completely original, which separates it from other fiction books with a magic system. This really makes this book worth the time and makes the reader want to read more from this series.
The highlight of this book is how unique it is compared to other books you would usually see in a library. Since it's a manga and has pictures for people like me who don't like reading, it really helped me actually enjoy and further understand the story. The average words in a YA book are around 50,000-80,000, and Dorohedoro is 52,000, but it felt like a lot less than that. Also, since it felt shorter than other books, it was easier to digest. If you are someone who likes knowing what's happening in a book, not just imagining it, but with mature themes, this is a book for you.
This book is for people who like magic-based books, but also something that's not all laughs and giggles. I would say this book is YA because of its adult themes. I would recommend this book to ages 13-22.
