In Robin Benway's Emmy and Oliver, two friends named Emmy and Oliver reunite after a decade during which they had not seen each other due to Oliver's abduction by his father. Emmy and Oliver develop a blossoming romantic relationship throughout the book as they go from being friends to more. Since my parents are somewhat protective, Emmy, the main character in the novel, is my favourite because we have a lot in common. I also felt Emmy was admirable since she had the courage to follow her passion for surfing in spite of her parents' disapproval, and she eventually told them that she surfed regardless of what they said. Emmy is the only character that gave me a reason to like the book. The other characters, the unrelatable and distasteful plot, and the actions of the characters were what turned me off to this book. The characters were in high school, yet they still went out. I wanted to find out why Oliver's dad took him for ten years, but they withheld that information, which is why I did not enjoy the book's atmosphere. I disagree with the characters' lifestyle since it is unhealthy and unreliable because they slept in late and snuck away. The book was uninteresting since I didn't connect with its tone or feel any kind of anticipation—I was just tired of reading it. I would suggest this novel to teenagers or anyone who enjoys high school romance, even though I did not enjoy it. Although I didn't particularly like the book, I'm still glad I read it. I'd give this book two stars overall.
