“Eight hours. Six friends. Five survive.” - Holly Jackson
Jackson has already established herself as an expert murder mystery writer with her series, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. I had read AGGTM (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder) previously, and so upon hearing of a new book release by Holly Jackson, I was immediately intrigued. I wanted to know…what happened? 6 people went, but only 5 came back alive…? In an RV…overnight…? Honestly, that sounds terrifying, but in the book world…terrifying may mean thrilling. So, I followed the main character, Red, as she details her experience in the RV, her relationship with the other characters, and the situation they find themselves in, that ultimately leads to the demise of one of the six friends.
Holly Jackson is a genius to me. The way she is able to construct such intricate stories while maintaining an easy-to-understand tone about her stories is incomparable. I love her writing and will continue to read her books.
Holly Jackson has a unique way of tying you to her characters, whether through love, hatred or indifference, and I saw this ability shine in Five Survive. I was forming opinions on the characters as if they were based off of real-life relationships, and to establish such a connection and understanding of the characters in the short period of time they are shown is truly talent. I read Five Survive in 1 sitting and would 100% do so again, with my jaw hanging on the floor and my mind reeling, once again.
