By Rebecca Yarros
4 Stars
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a great introduction to the romantasy genre for beginners. Yarros's simple writing style and approachable premise make it easy to enjoy. The plot isn't overly complicated but still manages to stay engaging. One of the highlights is the dynamic between the characters, especially Violet, the protagonist, and her mother. All the characters feel well-developed, with clear and believable motivations. Violet stands out as a unique female lead—she trains to become a dragon rider despite her background as a Scribe, facing real danger at every turn. Her growth is portrayed realistically, with proper training and progression.
However, I would have enjoyed the book more if it had a darker tone. While it's often said that cadet life is deadly, we see few examples of the real danger. A more foreboding atmosphere and better demonstration of the high stakes would have strengthened the story.
As for the romance, Xaden Riorson—son of a rebellion leader—is meant to be Violet's enemy, but their connection feels instant rather than gradual. So, calling it an "enemies-to-lovers" story isn't accurate; it's better described as a forbidden romance. Their chemistry and tension are well-executed in the first two-thirds of the book, but the romance accelerates too quickly toward the end, feeling a bit rushed.
Overall, Fourth Wing is a fun and enjoyable read with strong character dynamics and an exciting premise, though it left me wishing for a deeper, darker tone and slower romance development.
