Book Review: Fourth Wing

By Rebecca Yarros

3 Stars

Fourth Wing is a captivating fantasy novel that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman who is thrust into the dangerous world of dragon riders. The book is filled with action, adventure, and a touch of romance, making it perfect for fans of thrilling fantasy tales. I loved Violet’s character as her journey begins at the elite Basgiath War College, where she must navigate rigorous training, deadly trials, and fierce competition.

She is a relatable and strong protagonist who exemplifies resilience and bravery as she faces immense challenges. The romantic subplot is well-balanced and adds depth to the characters without overshadowing the main plot. At times, however, the plot can get a bit convoluted with various subplots and characters. It required me to pay extra attention to keep track of everything, especially the first 100 pages, but still, this book is a rollercoaster of twists and had me so hooked from the start. Not once did it feel boring or like I should just skim something; I definitely recommend it for people that love dystopian themes and the “enemies to lovers trope.” My second favourite character was Xaden. Xaden is introduced as a mysterious and highly skilled dragon rider. He’s intimidating and has an intense and interesting demeanour; he becomes one of Violet’s key allies, although their relationship is initially fraught with tension and distrust. Overall, Fourth Wing is a fantastic read for anyone who loves dragons, adventure, and a strong female lead.
