Book Review: Good Girl, Bad Blood

By Holly Jackson

3 Stars

Good Girl, Bad Blood was a good book, but it was a bit anticlimactic, and here’s why.

The setup to this was amazing, and this is in no way an inherently bad book, it’s just not as good as expected (dare I say, worse than the last book). This book follows the runaway story of Jamie Reynolds, who is the brother of Pip’s close friend and has only recently gone missing. This storyline had two distinct differences from the last one: 1) the “victim” is someone Pippa personally knows, and 2) The whole case is taking place during the events of the book, so the stakes are higher.

The good writing and GREAT characters have carried on over to this book, and I especially like the bond between Ravi and Pippa, which has clearly strengthened a ton. What I didn’t like was how straightforward the story could be at times. I usually prefer stories that make me think and rethink everything, but since the disappearance happened only days ago, Pippa and Ravi mostly just try to create a timeline for the night of the disappearance. I can see why this would appeal to many readers. It just doesn’t to me.

On to the things that I liked (remember how I said this isn’t an inherently bad book?). The emotional aspect of things: because Pippa personally knew Jamie and his family, we feel a larger sense of dread than we would if Jamie was a complete stranger. I especially liked the scenes of Jamie’s mother seeking help from Pip. The second thing I really liked was the very last twist. I will leave it to the readers to find out what the big plot twist is. All I will say is that the book really picked up at the end.
