Book Review: Heartless

By Marissa Meyer

5 Stars

If you love Alice in Wonderland, then you’ll love this. This 400+ page book follows Catherine Pickerton, who would one day be known as The Queen Of Hearts. It will show how Hearts once was before a sweet wishing baker transforms into the infamous Queen Of Hearts. Watching her as she goes through balls and tea parties, meeting friends and foes and even finding love in a court jester. Marissa Meyer captures an enchanting story of love and heartbreak. This story shows the anger and determination Cath goes through as she tries to pursue her want to become a baker. While reading this it made me want to try the mouthwatering baked goods Cath created, and had me wishing for her to achieve her dream. The first part is a little bit slow but will get you to love the characters and learn the intricacies of Cath and her life. Once you get to the middle, everything speeds up as things start to go south, and although you know the ending from the start, Meyer’s writing will still have you gasping and wanting to know what happens next. The writing is written beautifully, and it will enchant you as the story moves along. Heartless is a story that, as you read through it, you’ll see the deeper meaning of things said later on in the story, as it foreshadows the end. By the end of the book, I was hoping for a better ending for Cath and Jest, even though I knew it would never be achieved. This book got me to love the Queen of Hearts and showed me a whole other perspective on the story of Alice in Wonderland.
