Book Review: I Hope This Doesn’t Find You

By Ann Liang

4 Stars

I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by Ann Liang is the perfect coming-of-age story, blending themes of high school drama, mutual pining, and self-discovery. Readers follow Sadie, a perfect model student at her school. Sadie pushes herself to be a part of every school event, get perfect grades, and often finds herself doing far too much for other classmates. This is only made worse by her annoyingly perfect school co-captain, Julius. To deal with stress, Sadie secretly writes brutally honest emails to classmates and teachers- until they somehow get sent. When Sadie’s particularly angry message to Julius is sent, the two are assigned to spend time together until they can get along. Reputation soiled, Sadie must learn to survive a school filled with kids who now hate her and Julius, who may not be as bad as she thought.

Overall, this book was incredibly well-written, and you could feel how the chapters flowed into each other. There weren’t any slow or rushed parts, and it was perfectly paced. The characters were also multifaceted, creating a sense of connection- it was cool to observe their development throughout the story. Though, I would’ve liked it if the ending for the characters was detailed further. It is a light-hearted and relatable read, and I would recommend it to YA readers who enjoy a cute love story combined with coming-of-age themes. It illustrates how daunting it can be to not only be a teenager but also a student with expectations to meet and dreams to achieve. It addresses many common feelings amongst teens, such as the fear of failure, not reaching expectations, and simply not being liked. I really connected with the main message of the story, being that we need to remember we’re human and taking a break is important.
