Infinity Son, by Adam Silvera, is a heart-wrenching and breathtaking novel about Emil and Brighton, two brothers living in a New York filled with mythical creatures, Celestials and Specters. Celestials are born with their powers, but Specters take them by stealing creatures' blood. The brothers idolize a group of Celestials called the Spell Walkers and wish to become Celestials too. Then, shortly after their 18th birthday, they get attacked by a Specter, and Emil manifests Phoenix fire - a power only Specters could possess. After a video of the fight goes viral, the spell walkers take interest in Emil, and are willing to let Brighton tag along if it's Emil's condition. The brothers are faced with an undeniable fact: one of them has what it takes to be a hero, but not the one who desperately wants it.
This was an action-packed novel with plot twists that had me blown away. Not only that, but the characters are so realistic, you'd think that the spell walkers of New York are real. Another thing is that the actions and reactions of said characters make perfect sense instead of being overly dramatic or cold and emotionless. All in all, an amazing novel about fighting for equality and a better world.
This book was recommended to me by the librarians at the Oshawa Public Libraries, and I really enjoyed it. They had based it on my preferred genres, so if you enjoy fantasy and fiction set in the real world, I couldn't recommend Infinity Son more.
