Book Review: Kill Joy

By Holly Jackson

3 Stars

Kill Joy is the prequel to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. We follow Pip to a murder mystery party her friends throw — a make-believe 1920s town on a faraway island called Joy. I've read all of Holly Jackson's other books, like Five SurviveThe Reappearance of Rachel Price, and more. Knowing this, I went into the book expecting a page-turning thriller that kept me guessing.

Did this live up to my expectations? No. Was it a fun read? Yes!

I don't think Kill Joy was a book that kept me very engaged or interested in what was happening, since it was only a murder mystery party. There were many times when Holly Jackson built up the suspense, only for it to fizzle out. At first, I was intrigued by the suspense of what would happen. However, the suspense built up and went nowhere so often that I knew there was no major plot.

On the other hand, it was really fun to see Pip before A Good Girl's Guide To Murder and how she was always intrigued to solve these mysteries! Seeing all the side characters before the series also helped me understand how Pip saw each character and her opinions on them beforehand.

My final thoughts on this book are that it might have been more interesting if it had been released before the series came out, or if I read Kill Joy before the series, since it gives a really good introduction to the series. I think Kill Joy is a fun read if you want to step into the murder mystery world with Pip Fitz-Amobi one last time.
