Book Review: King of Sloth

By Ana Huang

5 Stars

King of Sloth by Ana Huang is an unexpectedly refreshing addition to her series, which offers a unique twist on the romance genre. King of Sloth follows the story of Lucian, a laid-back and seemingly unambitious man. Lucian comes from a wealthy family and has always been used to enjoying the pleasures of life without feeling the need to prove himself to anyone. Lucian avoids responsibility and pressure, preferring to spend his days indulging in his favourite hobbies and avoiding anything that requires too much effort. On the other hand, Solane, his publicist, is a fiercely ambitious and career-driven woman who is the polar opposite of Lucian. She always had to work hard for everything she had, and she was determined to achieve her goals and prove her worth. She’s focused, motivated, and doesn’t have time for anyone who doesn’t share her passion for success. When Solane and Lucian’s worlds collide, sparks fly, not just because of their intense attraction but also because of their vastly different outlooks on life. Despite their differences, as they get to know one another, they begin to challenge each other’s views. Solane starts to see the value in slowing down and appreciating life’s simple pleasures, while Lucian learns that a little ambition can go a long way. The writing style is witty and engaging, and what I loved most about King of Sloth is how it made me feel like it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Lucian’s journey reminded me that there’s no one right way to live life. The book also does an amazing job of showing that love doesn’t always have to be about grand gestures or constant drama. It can be about finding someone who accepts you for who you are, lazy days and all. For any teen who’s ever felt overwhelmed by the pressure to always be on the go and loves a spicy slow burn “reverse grumpy x sunshine trope,” this book is a must-read.
