Book Review: Let the Monster Out

5 Stars

Let the Monster Out follows the two main characters, Bones and Kyle, who are two 12-year-old boys who meet under strange circumstances and strange nightmares. The two, along with two other kids, go on a weird adventure to discover the mystery in their small Canadian town, learning clue after clue about everything, like the new free wifi everyone has gotten, turning everyone into zombies. Bones and Kyle must work together with their new friends to solve this mystery and save their small town from whatever this company is creating.

Overall, this book is amazing in its premise and characters. I think it also does a good job of tackling social issues, such as racism or ableism, as three of the main characters are people of colour and Kyle, one of our other main characters, is autistic. Along with that, the author does a great job of creating suspense for whatever is happening in their town with the wifi; it leads the reader to think about what could possibly be happening or if anything is happening at all. I think this book is very good, and I highly recommend it. It has many funny moments along with suspenseful ones, and very fleshed-out characters who I personally really like. Most of the characters' struggles feel real, such as Bones facing racism in his day-to-day life, and I feel it doesn't clash with the overarching plot with the wifi or zombie-like people. The author does a great job of keeping a nice balance between the two topics they bring up in this book. I genuinely recommend reading this book; I think the concept is really interesting and fun.
