Book Review: Matilda

By Roald Dahl

5 Stars

This novel is epic. The story revolves around the significance of how other people's opinions can either make us feel like proving ourselves more, a sense of self-confidence, as well as frustration. Matilda is a heartwarming story that inspires a lot about the fact that not everyone, even adults, are necessarily good people. As a strong child, Matilda (the main protagonist) shows a strong sense of knowledge based on what happens in her life when it comes to dealing with difficult adults. The novel is also really hilarious - as Matilda shows the antagonists what her sharp mind is capable of despite her young age, I had a lot of great laughs. Roald Dahl shows a strong perspective of bullies through significant examples through the characters in this novel. Furthermore, what I love the most about the novel is how smart Matilda is for her age. She also portrays a strong message of how age is just a number. Therefore, children can do anything they dream of as long as they believe in themselves despite what older kids/bullies tell them to bring them down. The novel actually inspired me to come out of my shell and go after my goals, as people will judge anyway. In terms of the comedy in the novel, I can absolutely guarantee that Roald Dahl would make an excellent comedian. The novel also has a very beautiful ending, in which Matilda is happy. Matilda is also one of the most powerful characters I have ever read about. Her ability to understand what adult in her life is not so great significantly gives her further strength to prove herself to them that she is not just any child. She is full of potential, and I was incredibly happy to see that all the antagonists had indeed learned their lesson by the end of the novel. Moreover, the story tends to have a lesson: never judge anyone by their age or appearance, and never underestimate their strengths due to their age, appearance, etc. You never know what that person has up their sleeve. The novel also seems to represent the fact that "Karma always has a way of coming back to you" and "what goes around, comes around." Overall, I loved this book so much. I highly recommend it to all bookworms out there!
