Neon Genesis Evangelion is a stunning and emotionally impactful masterpiece, with the manga and art by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Neon Genesis Evangelion follows the story of a young boy named Shinji Ikari who has little to no ambition in life, not caring if he lives or dies. Though that all changes once monsters called “Angels” attack his new city of Tokyo-3. Tokyo-3 is a futuristic city made to defend against the “Angels” and where a sizable portion of the story takes place including the Angel attacks that happen at various points throughout the book and the whole of Evangelion. Though the characters fight back against the “Angels” with mechs named Evangelions or “Eva” for short. Now the characters that pilot and command Evangelion are all extremely dynamic and I find myself more attached to the cast as I read especially the protagonist Shinji, as the situations, he goes through especially with piloting the Eva mechs cause him genuine pain and torture that feels scarily realistic some ways with some parts of the story making me feel pity for the characters and the world they live in.
No other manga has made me feel this way to date; it may be because of how the story is in a much darker setting or some other reason, but I know for sure that this manga is beautifully written and has a lasting impact on the reader. Continuing from my previous points, I find the world of Evangelion extremely interesting and always keeps you on your toes, and each chapter feels like the story is progressing at a fast pace but slow enough for someone to understand while not getting too lost in the story. Overall, I found this to be one of the greatest manga I have read in my lifetime so far, and I wish to continue reading Evangelion and similar works. This book gets a well-deserved. 4.9/5
