Book Review: Once Upon a Broken Heart

By Stephanie Garber

5 Stars

If you love fairytales with a dark twist, morally gray characters, and heart-wrenching romance, then Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber is a must-read. This is the first book of a trilogy series.

The story follows Evangeline Fox, a 17-year-old girl who believes deeply in true love and happily-ever-afters. Just when she thinks she has found her happily ever after, everything comes crashing down when she finds out that the person she loved the most is marrying another woman. Determined to stop this wedding, she makes a dangerous deal with the Prince of Hearts, Jacks, a Fate known for his twisted curses and charm. In exchange, she must give three kisses to whomever or whenever Jack wishes. Soon, she finds herself in an unknown kingdom called the North, where she gets drawn into a world full of dangerous games, magic, curses, and betrayals.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. It has the perfect combination of genres, which kept me intrigued while reading the book. Stephanie Graber didn’t fail to immerse you in her magical and whimsical world. The world build-up was INSANE. I honestly felt like I was living inside a fairytale. The plot is fast-paced, emotional, and most importantly, full of twists that you won’t see coming. Just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story flips everything upside down. The ending will leave you stunned and immediately reaching for the next book. If you love fairytales, then this book is the book for you because castles, curses, prophecies and magic surround every page, making it impossible not to get lost in the story. I rate this book 5/5.
