One Brother Shy, written by Terry Fallis, is a life-like story following Alex MacAskill, a chronically shy software engineer in his twenties, on a mission around the world to find and reunite with family he didn't even know existed after the unfortunate passing of his mother. Haunted by a traumatic high-school experience known only as 'Gabriel', he learns about identity and the importance of family.
I personally think Terry Fallis outdid himself with this novel. It is funny, heart-wrenching, sensitive and full of twists - much like its main character, Alex. Although unlike other books, One Brother Shy is fast-paced, but it makes sure not to pass over important details to the plot. Honestly, it lets you fill in the puzzle pieces along with Alex. Lastly, the format of this book is unlike any other. A notable example is the names of the chapters. Instead of something that describes the chapter itself, Terry Fallis gives us crucial information about Alex's past and its role in his behaviour now, shy and reluctant to talk to people.
I recommend this book to those that enjoy sad, but comical novels as well as those who just want to read a down-to-earth story. One Brother Shy has a bit of everything, from hockey to spies, to romance, and even a touch of real-life historical events. It really is a roller coaster of emotions, and if you are looking for a book to read, look no further than One Brother Shy.
