By Karen McManus
5 Stars
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus is an engaging book that's all about high school and a big mystery. It all starts when five kids end up in detention, and it seems like a regular high school thing. However, when one of them dies, things take a dark and suspenseful turn. One of the great things about this book is how well you get to know the four remaining students. They come from different social groups in the school, and each one of them has secrets they'd rather keep hidden. The story unfolds by switching between their perspectives, giving you insight into why they act the way they do.
What I found really exciting was how the story kept surprising me and the unpredictability of the plot. Just when I thought I'd figured it all out, the author threw in a surprising twist that made me rethink everything, which kept me eagerly turning the pages. The way the author used alternating perspectives allowed me to connect with the characters on a personal level. I understood what made them tick, what they were afraid of, and why they were hiding certain things. It's like I was right there with them, experiencing the highs and lows of their lives, which made the characters seem so much more real.
