Book Review: The Alchemist

By Paulo Coelho

5 Stars

The Alchemist is a captivating tale written by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. The tale depicts a Spanish shepherd boy who embarks on a journey to find treasure at the pyramids in Egypt. During this journey, he discovers more than just treasure. Santiago discovers himself and his Personal Legend. Santiago is guided by dreams, characters, visions, etc.

The most appealing part of the novel is profound wisdom throughout the novel. Coelho’s writing style is straightforward yet allows the reader to think critically about the plot and the actions the characters take. The novel includes philosophy that resonates deeply with readers and establishes a feeling of connecting with the novel. The novel encourages characteristics such as perseverance, resilience, independence, and confidence. The philosophy, themes, and ideas present are truly on different levels of thinking, encouraging all readers to think deeper.

However, although philosophy is a central component of the novel, its consistency can become somewhat “annoying.” Sometimes, it seems as if every aspect of Santiago’s journey is philosophized, though it does not have to be. It feels as if the philosophy is forced onto the reader at many points. Although this novel is about philosophical ideas, it should not be so forced as it disrupts the realism that the novel had started out with as it becomes almost “fairytale” like.

Despite this, The Alchemist is still a remarkable novel. I would highly recommend The Alchemist to those in need of motivation or in need of something refreshing. It’s particularly suited well for young readers, as well as those who enjoy basic philosophy and in-depth literature. It is certainly one of the greatest novels I have read.
