Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain

By Garth Stein

5 Stars

Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain is a book about the story of Denny Swift. He is a racecar driver going through a very hard time in his life. Themes such as loyalty, love, and loss are all explored through the eyes of his companion, Enzo. What makes this book amazing is the way that Garth Stein narrates the book. The book is narrated by Enzo, a dog. Which gives the book a very large and important emotional bond, as the story is told through the perspective of Enzo; it makes us, the readers, feel like we are personally in the story. That said, the book can feel overdramatic. Some parts of the book feel over the top and are written a certain way to get a reaction out of the reader; because of that, it makes the book feel too perfect at times. While these perfect moments add emotional weight, they often make the book seem unrealistic. This is also shown through the characters, as oftentimes characters seem to be making decisions just to cause a reaction instead of thinking logically. Although the conflict can feel unrealistic at times, it helps enforce the themes. Even though the book can feel overdramatic at times, it is still an amazing book. It is rare to find a story with deep emotions and themes portrayed perfectly. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys an emotional book with meaningful characters. If you love dogs, you will definitely enjoy it. If not, it is still an amazing choice for readers that will connect with you.
