Book Review: The Giver

By Lois Lowry

1 Star

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopian novel that focuses on a society where the citizens have no memories of its history. The citizens are not allowed to choose their careers. Instead, their career is chosen by the government. When kids reach a certain age, the government chooses their careers, regardless of their talents and likes. When Asher gets his career chosen, he gets ‘the receiver of memory’, a career that no one in society ever received. Asher is extraordinary as he sees red, unlike anyone in his society who only sees white and grey. He also has dreams about a girl he knows, which is not allowed in his society. This book is an awful book in my opinion. I read this book in 7th grade for school, and the plot was boring and was not intriguing as the setting was terrible. The setting in the story was terrible as it was static and not fun from all the restrictions and rules they have to obey. The setting in the story was lame, as nothing had colour, and the only colours were white and grey. The rules and restrictions were harsh. The characters were not unique, and they were all the same. The characters were static as they did not change. When I read a book, I want characters with different personalities, which the characters in the book did not have as they were all the same (from people in the society they lived in).
