The Marrow Thieves is a dystopian novel set in Canada, where global warming has severely impacted both the environment and humans, leading to the majority of the population losing the ability to dream. However, Indigenous people still possess the ability to dream, and their bone marrow has been believed to be able to restore the ability to dream. Leading Indigenous people to be hunted down by recruiters for their bone marrow. The world changes for the worse, where trusting people could be for the better or worse, where death becomes common, where protecting someone becomes difficult.
Frenchie, the main character in this novel, loses his family to recruiters, leading him to wander alone. Until one day, he met Miig, Chi-Boy, Wab, Tree, and the Elder Minerva, indigenous survivors. They form a group and end up getting along as a family as more time passes.
Ms. Cherie Dimaline did an incredible job in her writing since I could envision the characters and feel the pain and emotions that they were feeling in each scene. It felt as though it was real, like I was right there in front of the characters as I watched the story unfold. Which allowed me to connect with them and the story on a higher level.
The pace of the novel was very well done. Though some scenes felt a little rushed, not allowing me to sort out my thoughts and emotions, but other than that, the pace was good because the characters had time to find themselves, had time to sort out their feelings and develop their feelings.
I felt as though each scene wasn’t placed for fillers, but rather, each scene had a meaning and a place. Which I did enjoy!
In conclusion, I loved this book deeply. Its characters, the story, the pace, everything was well done and the unique plot!
