Book Review: The Maze Runner

By James Dashner

5 Stars

This dystopian novel written by James Dashner is the first book in The Maze Runner series. Thomas, the main character, finds himself in a mysterious place called the Glade, surrounded by other teenage boys whose memories have been erased like his. No one knows how and why they are stuck there or who is behind their imprisonment. He discovers that the Glade is encircled by a puzzling maze, and every night, deadly creatures roam the huge, ever-changing maze. Thus, the boys must find a way to escape before it's too late.

I loved this book because of the intriguing mystery and suspenseful twists and turns. The unknown purpose as to why the characters are confined kept me hooked, as well as the other lethal obstacles the characters had to overcome. The author also provides really good descriptions of the setting, which allowed me to visualize the story better.

I enjoyed the overall teamwork and friendship that occurred, as well as the bravery Thomas and the others displayed. In addition, I honestly found the whole concept of the Gladers having their own slang quite amusing, though sometimes you don't fully understand what the characters are saying. However, that is probably an unpopular opinion.

I think this novel is perfect for people who are into action-packed stories and dystopian settings and enjoy mystery and suspense. It's furthermore ideal for fans of The Hunger Games as well.

So, read to find out whether the boys will find a way to survive and escape without getting hurt—or worse.
