The story follows two boys throughout their lives. But they are not just any boys. One of the boys, given the name Achilles, is a half-god, son of Thetis, a sea nymph. The other boy, Patroclus, is the son of a king. They face life together and grow side by side against the truth of the world. I loved The Song of Achilles from the very beginning. The boys had such pure intentions, and I loved their relationship for that. I loved Patroclus and the journey he had as a character. Although the story is about Achilles, it is told from the perspective of Patroclus. The writing from beginning to end was well executed. The emotion and intensity of scenes were, in fact, delivered. If people are looking for a gay book, look no further, as this is an aspect of the story. That being said, the plot was not heavily focused on romance, so that is one thing to consider. But the tension is for sure there. Everything about this book made me feel good regardless of the plot line. It featured love, Greek mythology, battles and the struggles of destiny. There were some good messages etched in the story. Because of this, it would be a really good option as a book club read as well. So much could be discussed; for one, the plot, the characters, themes that pop up in the book, wants for the continuation and ending of the book, etc. I would recommend The Song of Achilles to anyone who enjoys Greek mythology as well as gay romance. Honestly, I have no complaints about it. It was 100% worth the read. If I could read this again for the first time, I would.
