Book Review: The Voting Booth

By Brandy Colbert

4 Stars

The Voting Booth is a complex story about two high school students hoping to change the world with their actions. Marva has been looking forward to the election for years, mainly because it is the first election where she can legally vote. She's worked hard for many years to educate people on the election and convince people to vote. So when she finds Duke having trouble with voting, she makes it her mission to help him vote. Duke isn't really interested in the election; he'd rather get it over with. Duke and Marva go through many ups and downs, both resolving their own problems all in one day, learning new things.

Their story is amazing, and personally, I found myself tearing up over this book many times. The Voting Booth talks about racism and real-world problems, which affect me to a certain extent as a brown female. This book really touched my heart, and I genuinely had nothing bad to say about this book. Not only did I get to see the view of these Black kids in America affected by the past of America, but I also got to learn how it is to live in such horrible circumstances where they have to prove that they're good people in the community.
