Movie Review: Coraline

Directed by Henry Selick

5 Stars

Coraline is a dark fantasy horror movie that follows a young girl named Coraline, who moves to the Pink Palace in Oregon with her two workaholic parents. As her parents immediately get back to working after the move, Coraline becomes curious and discovers a secret door in the house that leads her to a strange, alternate dimension in which she has everything she desires; however, she discovers everything isn't as perfect as it seems. This movie is definitely a staple for the fall season. The story is very interesting and dark, even though it's an animated movie. This movie is great for people of all ages. For a younger audience, this movie is a really great introduction to horror movies, as it isn't as scary as other popular movies out there, but still has that dark and spooky element to it. However, I think that an older audience would also really enjoy this movie for its dark vibe that's fun to watch during the Halloween season. An older audience will also probably enjoy finding the deeper elements in the movie and the connections between the characters. I also think that viewers will really enjoy Coraline's character. She is very intelligent, brave, and stubborn, even when faced with difficult situations throughout the movie. Also, the way that the movie is made visually is really interesting and adds to the feel of the story. Overall, I would give this movie 5/5 stars. I think that it's a great movie to watch around Halloween, and it's a great way to introduce horror movies for all ages.
