Movie Review: Life of Pi

Directed by Ang Lee

4 Stars

The Life of Pi is a breathtaking adventure-drama film released in 2012, directed and produced by Ang Lee. It is a story of faith, courage, perseverance, and survival amid a traumatic experience of a 16-year-old lad named Piscine "Pi" Molitor Patel, who journeys to Canada from his home in Pondicherry, India, to find a better life. The film features a compelling cast with Suraj Sharma in the lead role as Pi, Tabu as the mother, Jag Huang as the sailor, and Gerard Depardieu as the cook. The actors' performance powerfully captures the emotions of joy, grief, or anger that draw the audience to empathize. Moreover, this film is phenomenal in the use of technology, special effects, and overall cinematography (Claudio Miranda), which is seen in how realistic the animal characters' movements are when reacting and attacking. However, there are several instances where the continuity and build-up of the storyline are broken because the story switches from the present time (Pi talking to the author) to the past (the storytelling of Pi's journey) and vice versa. In spite of that, the Life of Pi is a well-created film overall as its expert visual storytelling and performance captivate movie enthusiasts from beginning to end. My rating of the movie is four red roses and six petals out of five. What sets this film apart is its impact on the viewers after watching the movie. Personally, this film encourages me to reflect on God, my faith, and my beliefs. A blockbuster movie that affects its audience in a deeper way is truly a masterpiece!
