Movie Review: Twilight

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke

3 Stars

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a classic in teen fiction: vampires, lust and love. We are introduced to Bella Swan, who has recently moved to Forks, Washington, to live with her family…however, when starting at her new school, she meets Edward. Edward acts a little odd, almost seemingly stand-offish with Bella…hmm. We soon find out why and watch Bella interact with Edward throughout the rest of the movie, their relationship evolving from friendship to something more...

I have loved Twilight since I read the book in the 7th grade, and when I watched the movie (after completing the book, of course), I was happy and a little underwhelmed. Meyer’s writing style itself is significant to the story, as it sets the mood for how we are to interpret Bella and the multitude of complex characters we are introduced to throughout the novel. However, the content was more striking. The complexity of the plot and vampire system introduced was intriguing and persisted an interest in continuing the series. Yet, when it was made into a film, it lost its essence for me. While the film captured several key moments in Bella’s journey, it did not feel as if it was the book in picture form, but rather a separate entity, which was intriguing in its own right.

I continue to recommend both the movie and the book, Twilight, to anyone interested in vampires and teen fiction. The distance between the book and movie adaptation, for me, does not completely eradicate the enjoyment with which I enjoy both forms. Twilight is a classic and will remain to be, as long as the nostalgia remains.
