Television Review: You. The Complete 1st Season

Season 1 of You follows Joe Goldberg, a manager at a bookstore in New York City. When Joe runs into Guinevere Beck in said bookstore, a young woman aspiring to be a well-known author, he is immediately intrigued by her. However, as the season progresses, we see how Joe’s seemingly normal interest in Beck turns into an intense, psychotic obsession, getting rid of anything and anyone that gets in the way of their relationship.   

I was immediately hooked by this series. Although it was pretty disturbing at times, the story unfolding was just so suspenseful that you feel like you need to keep watching. I thought it was really interesting how the story is told through Joe’s perspective and with his inner monologue, as it helps to understand his thinking and how he always finds a way to rationalize his actions. I also thought that there were a lot of great supporting characters, like Paco. As we learn more about Paco’s life and how his relationship with Joe helped him, it makes it harder to decipher Joe’s true character. I also thought that Peach’s character was very interesting as her character is very smart, sharp, and has multiple sides to her personality that are slowly uncovered through the season. Although there was a lot that I found interesting about this season, one thing that I personally didn’t like was the ending, although I guess it becomes sort of predictable throughout the episodes. Because of the ending, I would give it 4/5 stars. I would recommend this show to an older, mature audience who enjoys darker and more thrilling shows.
