Renewing Your Library Card

Library cards expire from time to time to make sure your account information is up to date. If your card has expired, renewing it is easy.

When Does My Library Card Expire?

Regular Library Cards
Digital Library Cards
  • Expire one (1) year from the date of issue or renewal
  • Can be renewed by calling the Library at (905) 579‑6111

How Can I Tell When My Card Will Expire?

  • Regular Card holders will receive two notifications via their preferred method:        
    • One notice 6 weeks before expiry
    • One notice 3 weeks before expiry
  • Digital Card holders will receive one notice 30 days before expiry.

Your card expiry date will always be displayed on the My Settings page, opens a new window in your account. Sixty (60) days before your card expires, a message will appear on your My Library Dashboard page. 

To check your account online, select the purple Log In/My OPL button at the top right to register your account or reset your password.

What Happens When My Card Expires?

Your card expires at midnight (EST) on the expiry date. Once your card has expired, you will not be able to:

  • Borrow books or other items
  • Renew items you already have
  • Place holds
  • Access eBooks or other digital content

You can renew your card at any time, before or after the expiry date.

How Do I Renew My Library Card?

Outstanding Charges
  • Any fines or fees on your account must be paid before your card can be renewed
  • Payments can be made at any library branch

Upgrading a Digital Card to a Full‑Service Card

If you have a Digital Card and want to:

  • Borrow physical materials (books, movies, video games)
  • Place holds
  • Request Interlibrary Loans

You must visit a library branch, opens a new window with valid identification, opens a new window to upgrade your card.

Why Do Library Cards Expire?

Library cards expire so we can:

  • Keep your contact information current
  • Confirm you are still eligible for a library card
  • Address any outstanding charges on your account
