Welcome to Oshawa Public Libraries' Memory Lab!

Located in our Local History Room at the McLaughlin Branch, our Memory Lab technology can help you preserve your precious memories for generations. Whether you have old photographs, VHS tapes, vinyl records, or audio cassettes, our equipment can help you convert them into digital formats.

Available Equipment

Our Memory Lab gives you access to a range of equipment for converting various formats.

  • Try the VHS/DVD adaptor (Region 1/NTSC only)
  • Digitize your 8mm and Super8 films
  • Turn your audio cassettes and vinyl records into MP3 files
  • Digitize your photos, negatives or slides using the flatbed scanner

Book a Memory Lab Session

Booking Process
  • All appointments must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
  • One 3-hour appointment is permitted per week.

Requirements
  • An Oshawa Public Libraries card in good standing is mandatory.
  • Users must be over 18 years old.
  • Memory Lab sessions are available during the Local History Room's opening hours (Mon-Fri, 2-5 pm) or by appointment.
  • Users must read and sign the Memory Lab Waiver.
During Your Session
  • Equipment and software are self-serve. If you are not comfortable using a computer, consider bringing someone with you who can help.
  • Staff will give you an overview of the equipment and software and assist you with any technical issues.
  • You must remain in the Local History Room during your session.
  • Please bring a USB flash drive (minimum 32 GB) or external hard drive for saving your files.
  • If you are more than 10 minutes late for your booking, it will be cancelled.

Please note the equipment in the Memory Lab is to be used for lawful purposes and not to create physical and digital content that is:

  • Prohibited by provincial or federal law.
  • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
  • In violation of another's intellectual property rights.
