Book Review: 1984

By George Orwell

5 Stars

1984 by George Orwell is a compelling and terrifying dystopian read. Despite being written in 1949, over 76 years ago, the conflict of the story still stands in 2025. The main character, Winston Smith, grapples with the reality of what he knows is true and what the government tells him to believe is true because they say it is. He goes on a journey to discover the facts and the lies while running away from the government that does not want their people to use critical thinking. I found 1984 had parallels to life today. George Orwell wrote this book with the idea of how he imagined the future would be. It dived deep into how we as people are fed truths by politicians and do not use our freedom to exert critical thought on whether what we hear is true or false. Our freedom of thought is priceless and often taken for granted. I would recommend 1984 to teens over the age of 16 as it does have some graphic content. My only criticism is that sometimes the story feels hard to follow, some parts are not necessary to tell the point of the story and could have been removed. Overall, this was an amazing and eye-opening book that I think all young teens on the cusp of turning 18 should read. It gives for a new perspective on how easily truth can be manipulated.
