Book Review: Better Than The Movies

By Lynn Painter

5 Stars

Within the 350 pages of this book, Lynn Painter made me fall in love. Liz Buxbaum has been in love with Michael Young since they were kids, playing on the sidewalk and running down the street. So when he moves back into town and starts to become close with Liz's 'annoying' neighbour Wes Bennett, she conducts a plan that will give them both what they want. But as the story continues, Liz suspects that maybe her perception of happily ever after isn't what it used to be because suddenly, the annoying kid who she lived beside turns out to be a pretty great guy. Better Than The Movies is a cute rom-com that will have you smiling to yourself as you flip through the pages. Following Liz as her schemes for the perfect prom moment to happen and the challenge of trying to do it with her mother in mind. The last few months of senior year are a whirlwind as new feelings sprout, and the fear of what graduating without her mother means. I couldn't put this book down as I was reading it, waiting for the scheme to unravel. This is a quick, easy read that I finished within a day, and I haven't been able to stop thinking of it since. When I first picked this up, I definitely didn't think I'd love it as much as I do, but while reading, I found it easy to fall in love with the plot and characters, especially Wes and Liz. The moments they share, even as they're 'enemies,' brought a smile to my face.
