Book Review: Love & Gelato

By Jenna Evans Welch

4 Stars

In the novel Love & Gelato, Lina, an American teenager, goes on an impromptu trip to Italy, as it was her mother's dying wish. The purpose of the trip is for Lina to connect with her father, whom her mother has never spoken about. Initially, Lina dreads the trip as she feels alone in a new country. She doesn't feel like she fits in or belongs. But as time went on, she explored the wonders of Italy, made new friends, and she began to understand herself better. She learns about her mother's past through her diary and who her father really is.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to readers 12+. I really liked how this book was mainly about self-discovery and had romance as the subplot. So, I wouldn't necessarily title this as a romance book per se, but more so a fun summer book. I don't think the book was very thought-provoking or new, but I think it's a fantastic summer read if you are not looking for anything intense. I liked how the characters were definitely human and had their flaws. This made them more likable and relatable. The book takes you on a beautiful journey where you can watch the characters learn and grow throughout the book. In the novel, readers can see how Lina's relationship with herself has a direct impact on her relationships with others. I think the author, Jenna Evans Welch, did an excellent job of using imagery to portray Italy in a very alluring way that almost made you feel like you were experiencing Italy for the first time with the main character.
