Book Review: Neon Genesis Evangelion Volume 13

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
5 Stars

Evangelion Volume Thirteen is the final installment of the masterful Evangelion manga series written and illustrated by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Who finally finishes Evangelion with a beautiful and impactful conclusion. This volume, unlike the others, only covers Volume Thirteen and is much shorter than the rest of the collection, with this volume only covering the end of the series and a bit of a bonus chapter. Though this volume picks up directly after the events of Volume Twelve and continues with the final arc of the series with a cohesive ending that the entire story has foreshadowed and built up to. As most loose ends are tied up while others are left up to interpretation, which I find an extremely interesting choice for the story as the ending, especially the bonus chapter, left me quite confused.

Though art wise, this chapter has some amazing highlights, delivering some of the most iconic panels and scenes in history that you may recognize before you even read the manga itself. The moments in this volume are also quite tense, even more tense than the last volume in some ways. Though some readers may find much of the ending confusing, as I did upon first reading it. Though I thought about the ending long enough, I began to understand and appreciate it in my own way, leading me to an enjoyable reading experience. I also understand that other readers may not have the same opinion, especially when it comes to the ending. I am hopeful that several types of readers will find enjoyment in this volume. With all that said, I found this volume to be a simply amazing but not perfect ending to the series of Evangelion and earns a well-deserved 4.7/5. I have some issues, but nothing too damaging to the story. If I were to rate the whole Evangelion manga series, I would rate it a solid 4.8/5 and wish more of the current generation of manga was like this.
