Book Review: Star Wars Rebels. 1

4 Stars

Star Wars Rebels Volume One is an adaptation of the Star Wars Rebels TV show that aired from October 3, 2014, and concluded with the final episode airing on March 5, 2018. This adaptation and its art are by Akira Aoki. Star Wars Rebels follows the story of young Ezra Bridger, a street rat living under the Galactic Empire's rule on a planet by the name of Lothal. The citizens of Lothal are persecuted and mistreated by the soldiers and officers of the Empire. Many people, including Ezra, are forced to steal to survive, either from the shops around or from the Empire itself. During one of Ezra's escapades, he comes into conflict with a group of individuals also attempting to steal from the Empire. Through a twist of fate, he ends up joining them, forming the first group of rebels against the Empire on Lothal. I believe this adaptation of the show expresses the setting and characters quite well, despite being at such a faster pace than the actual series. This does have its downsides, as some details have to be cut out due to the pacing, leading to an overall lesser story and world experience. The art was surprisingly good and brought the story to life. At times, it especially stands out with how it portrays the villains quite well. Overall, a well-done adaptation of the Star Wars Rebels show, sporting some well-done art but with some issues with the pacing as an adaptation, earning a decent 3.7 out of 5.
