Book Review: The Silver Eyes

By Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley

4 Stars

The Silver Eyes is a thriller novel based on the Five Nights at Freddy's games. The novel follows Charlie, a teenage girl who returns to her hometown for a memorial honouring Micheal, one of five children who disappeared at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Charlie reunites with her childhood group of friends who decide to explore the abandoned pizzeria, and they make horrifying discoveries about Micheal's disappearance. The novel's core strength is its exceptional character and thematic writing. The characters are compelling, believable, and subtle. However, some characters do not meet the same quality as the others. Two of Charlie's friends, Carlton and Lamar, feel out of place due to how differently and poorly written they are compared to the rest of the characters. Lamar is forgettable, and Carlton is irritating to read. The plot, for the first two-thirds, is decent but boring as it lacks any conflict. The characters simply just go to places, which makes the novel monotonous to read halfway through the second third. The last third, however, is fantastic as the plot finally picks up momentum and utilizes all of the story elements. Overall, The Silver Eyes is a perfectly fine novel. While it does suffer from poor pacing and a handful of bad characters, the rest of the novel makes up for it. I would recommend The Silver Eyes for fans of thriller novels and of the Five Nights at Freddy's games. However, I would not recommend the novel to those looking for horror or with a low tolerance for annoying character writing.
