Movie Review: Peter Rabbit

Directed by Will Gluck

5 Stars

This 2018 movie adaptation of the beloved stories of Peter Rabbit by acclaimed children’s author Beatrix Potter is not only a new spin on classic characters, but also a hilariously entertaining movie for the whole family. Peter Rabbit and his sisters – Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail – and cousin, Benjamin, were always warned against going into Mr. McGregor’s garden after Peter’s father had a terrible accident there. However, this mischievous gang always found a way to steal their meals from his garden. But when old McGregor dies, his nephew from the city, Thomas, inherits his house. This begins a ferocious yet hilarious battle between him and the bunnies. Bea, the next-door neighbour, always cared for the bunnies as tenderly as the mother Peter and his sisters had lost. But when she and Thomas begin to develop a relationship, much to the bunnies’ dislike, the battle intensifies.

This comedy has always been a favourite of my family, and I have enjoyed it immensely many times over. The side-splitting humour was delightfully balanced with touching and honest emotion. I particularly enjoyed how realistic the digital animals were. The cast – which includes James Corden as Peter Rabbit, Domhnall Gleeson as Thomas McGregor, Rose Byrne as Bea – all played their roles excellently. In addition, the consistent onslaught of hilarity throughout this movie kept me engaged and laughing the whole time. The vivid and relatable characters are sure to steal your heart as they did mine, making this a movie to watch and rewatch many times over.
