Book Review: Choujin X. 1

By Sui Ishida

4 Stars

Choujin X is a story and illustrations by Sui Ishida, the creator of Tokyo Ghoul. Coming off the heat of the success of Tokyo Ghoul, Sui Ishida has continued to provide intriguing stories with Choujin X. This story begins with a boy named Tokio Kurohara and his best friend, Azuma Higashi, in a world filled with beings called Choujin, which are, in a sense, beings with various supernatural abilities. In this dangerous world, Tokio Kurohara ends up becoming a Choujin through rather unfortunate means. Overall, while reading this, I found it surprisingly comedic, laughing out loud at some of the jokes and visual gags. I find it interesting how, despite some of the horror themes in the book, Sui Ishida incorporates comedy that does not break immersion. Though the story is quite good, I find the protagonist to be rather tiring at times due to how he always tends to put himself down and put others on pedestals. To me, this feels quite repetitive, as this has been done in Sui's other works. However, I trust that the protagonist will, without a doubt, develop and grow on me. The Choujin are handled quite well and are very unique in their power sets, leading to diverse villains with differing motivations, along with an interesting world. Overall, I did find myself enjoying this story despite my issues with the protagonist. To conclude, Choujin X was a well-done mix of horror and comedy that I wish to see more of. I am quite eager to see where the story will lead and how the protagonist will develop. 4.4 out of 5.
