Book Review: Fire Force. 1

By Atsushi Ohkubo

5 Stars

Fire Force Volume One, written and illustrated by Atsushi Ohkubo, takes place in a world where humanity is ravaged by a condition known as spontaneous human combustion. This condition affects humans, causing them to suddenly burst into flames and become monsters called Infernals with no prior indication. In this world of flames, there is hope within the fire by the name of the Fire Force, unique firefighters with various flame-based powers who combat these threats. In this world, Shinra Kusakabe seeks to become a part of the Fire Force despite being looked down upon and feared by the community for his past and rather awkward smile, which is often perceived as terrifying. The story of Fire Force features some truly amazing art that has its own unique style, which I found myself drawn to. So far, the story seems interesting, and the mystery behind spontaneous human combustion being at the forefront of the narrative is one of the most enjoyable aspects, in my opinion. It is a simple yet effective way to move the plot forward. The characters also have brilliant and recognizable designs. However, a glaring issue really detracts from both the story and one character in particular: the fan service is rather excessive and is a very annoying, sadly recurring part of the story. Even with that major flaw, Fire Force is worth a read. With all its flaws, it is still quite enjoyable due to the art, engaging story, and interesting cast of characters. Overall, a strong, 4.5 out of 5.
