By Barbara Haworth-Attard
3 Stars
I give Haunted by Barbara Howard-Attard a 3 out of 5 stars. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t totally blow me away either. The idea behind the story is really cool. It makes it ghosts, history, and mystery, which sounds super interesting to me at first. And it did have its moments, especially when things started to come together near the end.
The book follows a girl named Dee who moves into an old house and starts seeing a ghost. She tries to figure out what the ghost wants and uncover some dark stuff from the past. The ghost parts were kind of creepy, but not super scary, so if you’re looking for something terrifying, this probably isn’t it.
I liked that it dealt with serious stuff like grief and mental health, and Dee felt pretty real. But I found the pacing kind of slow in some places. I kept waiting for more exciting things to happen, and sometimes I just dragged a bit. Also, some parts are a little predictable. I kind of guessed what was going on before the big reveal.
Overall, Haunted was an ok read. It’s good if you like ghost stories that are more emotional than scary, and it has a solid message. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. I just didn’t leave a huge impact on me.
